The story of Dan Schneider, also known as The Pharmacist, will be familiar to anyone who’s browsed Netflix’s list of Trending Shows within the last few months. The must-watch docuseries, The Pharmacist, tells of Dan's perseverance in both independently solving the case of his 22-year old son's murder in a drug-deal gone bad and subsequent risking of his own life to expose the impending opioid crisis in the US. It makes for one of the most captivating real-life underdog stories I've ever seen. I could not wait for this conversation, though I knew it would be hard.
Like Dan, I lost my son Ali at age 22. Ali, like Danny (Dan's son), was wise far beyond his years and has been guiding my life before and after his passing. Though I do speak to Dan about the shared pain of losing our sons, you will notice that most of the conversation is about the hope, understanding, and purpose we've both derived from this loss. Danny's passing led Dan to found his Tunnel of Hope mission to fight drug abuse. Ali's passing led to my lifelong pursuit of trying to spread happiness with One Billion Happy. I still believe that if Ali knew the results of his departure, he would have volunteered to go.
