Dr. Dan Siegel (Part 1) - The Wheel of Awareness, Energy and the Mind
Jun 17, 2020 Episode 18

Dr. Dan Siegel and I did not want to stop this incredible conversation, so this will be a two-part episode. Listen to Part 2 here.

Dr. Dan Siegel is an internationally acclaimed author, award-winning educator, and child psychiatrist. He is currently a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine where he also serves as a co-investigator at the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development and co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center. He is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational center devoted to promoting insight, compassion, and empathy in individuals, families, institutions and communities. His five New York Times bestsellers are Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence; Mind: A Journey to the Heart of Being Human; Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain; and two books with Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D.: The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline.

Dan defines the mind as an "emergent, self-organizing, embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information." How he landed on that definition is a fascinating story of gathering 40 of the brightest minds across different disciplines to discuss the question: Is the mind within us or between us?

In Part 1, we discuss:

  • What it's like confronting updated science in publishing and revising an academic book
  • The connection between mental disorders and genetics
  • A scientific take on nature vs. nurture and the fragility of child development
  • How Dan's career studying salmon enzymes by day and the subjective human experience on a suicide hotline by night led him to medicine and psychiatry
  • An enlightening and challenging discussion on what the mind actually is
  • Finding concrete meaning and place for the word "energy" in discussing consciousness scientifically
  • Dan's Wheel of Awareness that considers eight senses rather than just five
  • How the pandemic has shown us all the reality of interconnection
