Brana Dane - The Case for Slow Fashion and a More Humane Modeling Industry
Nov 11, 2020 Season 1 Episode 60
Mo Gawdat and Brana Dane

Today's guest is Brana Dane, best described as a "SupeRoleModel". She is a sustainability advocate, an influencer, TV host, artist, activist, and model who has both appeared and been published in some of the top magazines for some of the top beauty brands around the world. Brana fights for a fairer, more sustainable, and more humane garment and fashion industry.

As one of the leaders of the game-changing “model mafia” based out of NYC, Brana co-produces and supports sustainability focused events for models. Brana herself is a host for the global FNL Network on Amazon Prime and writes interviews for Bella Magazine on the change-makers of our time. An artist for over a decade, she has had recent gallery shows in Chelsea, Tribeca, the Hamptons and Brooklyn.

Listen as we discuss:

  • Struggling with self-love and the pandemic of insecurity among models
  • How fluctuating fashion trends can deem a model's looks desirable or not
  • How models develop thick skin from being criticized bluntly and consistently
  • The baffling comment of being told your looks don't match your personality
  • My personal aversion to following fashion trends
  • The "Model Mafia" that's pushing for changes in the fashion industry
  • The sad reality of how fashion garments are made and the Rana Plaza collapse
  • The practice of luxury fashion burning their unsold stock to maintain scarcity
  • A discussion on child models and their extreme vulnerability
  • How Brana juggles and threads activism, art, modeling, and media
  • Why do we treat women like objects?
  • The subjectivity of beauty standards.
  • Pro tip: admire the beauty of others rather than envy it
  • Seeing the way you dress as a way of showing respect to the people you're meeting
  • Brana's struggle with an eating disorder
