Jan 28, 2021 Episode 84
Mo Gawdat and Ruby Wax

Today’s guest is the brilliant Ruby Wax.

For those of you who follow Ruby, you'll know what to expect (and the title of this episode likely won't offend you). For those who haven't been exposed to her work, note that Ruby uses comedy to both communicate, destigmatize, and cope with mental illness. She is hilarious, but also a serious researcher and a renowned force for good. If you're listening to Slo Mo, you're likely already open-minded, but consider this the extent of my disclaimer that this episode contains words like "whore". Onward.

Ruby is a successful comedian, TV writer and performer of over 25 years. She also holds a master’s degree in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy from Oxford University, and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for her services to mental health.

She is the author of books Sane New World and A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled and has toured all over the world with the accompanying one-woman shows. Both books have reached the number one spot on the Sunday Times bestsellers list and a third book, How to Be Human: The Manual was also a major bestseller. In March 2017 she launched Frazzled Café in partnership with Marks & Spencer and in November 2017, she was announced as the president of the UK’s leading relationship support charity Relate.

Listen as we discuss:

  • How COVID has ushered in the Golden Age of Empathy
  • Developing Compassion Overload  from all the suffering and tragedy we're fed
  • How to focus your empathy on areas you can actually make an impact
  • Ruby's Frazzled Café
  • Survival of the fittest is about who collaborates best, not about 'me first'
  • How technology is both the solution and the cause
  • My thoughts on how and when Big Tech companies began to go astray
  • Were ancient humans also depressed?
  • How Ruby staves off depression when she feels it creeping on
  • How she turned depression into comedy, which saved her life
  • Depression is impossible to live with.
  • Ruby and my own advice on what to do when you're depressed
  • Focusing on making your own little world better is the first step to helping
  • Whore moments on the route to wisdom
  • Some hilarious looks back on work Ruby did when she was addicted to game
  • Are too much screens contributing to mental illness?
