Dr. Bruce Greyson - What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond
Show Notes

Today's guest is Dr. Bruce Greyson, discussing one of my all time favorite topics: near-death experiences.

Bruce is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. His interest in near-death experiences (NDE's) began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body.

That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals. He co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), an organization to support and promote research into these experiences. Through his research, he has discovered common and universal themes in near-death experiences that go beyond neurophysiological or cultural interpretations, as well as patterns of consistent aftereffects on individuals’ attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities.

He is the author of the newly released After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond, a fantastic book I recommend.

Listen as we discuss:

  • Bruce's new book, After, and the decades of research behind it
  • Growing up in a materialist household without consideration of the non-physical
  • The incredible story of how he came to believe in and begin researching NDE's
  • How do you measure near death experiences scientifically?
  • The characteristics and definition of near-death experiences.
  • Getting the brain out of the way can actually lead to clearer thinking.
  • "The brain is the messenger and interpreter of the mind."
  • The senses and mind only let in the signals we need for survival, not spirituality.
  • Multiple cases of how patients leave their bodies and see verifiable truths
  • Life review and meeting deceased love ones, even those they didn't know died.
  • The complete elimination of the fear of death is the main after effect of a NDE.
  • The evidence points to the physical world not being the whole story.
