Mo Gawdat and Emma Gannon

Today's guest is the wonderful Emma Gannon. I loved this conversation.

Emma is a Sunday Times bestselling author, speaker, novelist and host of the no. 1 careers podcast in the UK, Ctrl Alt Delete.

Emma has blogged since 2009; podcasted since 2016 and is the author of four books to date. She was selected in the 2018 Forbes 30 under 30 list. Her non-fiction works include the bestseller The Multi-Hyphen Method and Sabotage. Her next non-fiction is called (Dis)Connected: How to Stay Human in an Online World, due to be published in December 2021.

In July 2020, her first novel Olive was published and hit no.1 in the Apple audiobook charts. She is currently writing her second novel.

Her Webby-nominated podcast Ctrl, Alt, Delete is a non-traditional careers podcast founded in 2016 and gives an insight into people who’ve looked at their interests to shape the work they do. It has had nearly 8 million downloads.

Listen as we discuss:

  • The motif in all her works: be yourself and live life on your own path.
  • Why is going down your own path such a big fear for everyone?
  • How does she juggle so many diverse projects and so successfully?
  • Her novel, Olive, and being child-free by choice
  • Generational differences in expectations for having children.
  • Overcoming the inner-critic, and how it begins with questioning.
  • The unseen consistency and hard work that leads to success.
  • Everybody has their thing, and all humans have the need for peace and to create.
  • The fear of making the wrong decision in life is a driving factor for many of us.
  • How she interviewed close to 100 women who didn't want kids before writing Olive.
  • Her next book, Disconnected, and how to stay civil online.
  • My next book, Scary Smart, and how we need to be better people online to raise AI right.
