Steve Biddulph (Part 1) - How to Raise Boys to Become Great Men
Show Notes

This is Part 1 of my talk with Steve Biddulph. Steve is one of the world’s best known parent educators, and, I kid you not, this two part episode has been one of the most enlightening conversations of my life. Steve is a gem of a human being.

A psychologist for 30 years, he is now retired but continues to write and teach. His books, including The Secret of Happy Children, Raising Boys, The New Manhood and now 10 Things Girls Need Most are in four million homes and 31 languages.  They have influenced the way we look at childhood and especially the development of boys and men. Today, the mental health of girls and young women globally is also a major focus of his.

Steve was voted Australian Father of the Year 2001 for his work encouraging dads, and a Member of the Order of Australia for his work in young people’s mental health. He has two grown up children, and lives in Tasmania with his wife and co-author Shaaron.

In Part 1, listen as we discuss:

  • How the traumas of the 20th century led to the most under-fathered generation in history.
  • Dads are not "Assistant Moms."
  • From ages 0-6, boys live in mom's world, then begin to worship the father.
  • After my son was born, I decided in that moment I'd become the ultimate provider.
  • The dangers of dads thinking their only job is to provide, not to to show love or show up.
  • "Hurry is the enemy of love."
  • Why Microsoft in Australia sends their employees home at 5pm sharp.
  • The Anglo-Saxon mentality to raising boys is to ensure they are ready for war.
  • How society pressures fathers away from their heart's instinct to be a part of raising a child.
  • Repairing the dad wound in the family opens up the river of love.
  • My own father, who was pure love, pure heart, and a genius.
  • Real masculinity is having both heart and backbone.
